2,600km, four months, one dot moving up the coast — none of it happens without the people and companies below.
On 20 October 2012 I put in at the mouth of the Orange River for a second attempt at paddling solo around South Africa. The first attempt, in December 2011, lasted ten days: a shark took a swipe at me on day three, my kayak broke in half on day five, and I was robbed in Durban on day ten. You don’t get a second run at something like that on your own.
I was paddling to raise funds for Miles for Smiles, which pays for corrective surgery for children born with cleft palates — at the time around R5,500 per operation, with the doctors donating their own time. Over roughly four months and 2,600km of coastline, from the Namibian border to the Mozambique line, the people and companies below are what kept the trip moving: gear on the water, a satellite tracker so people could follow the dot up the coast, a signwritten Land Rover with an Alu-Cab canopy for the shore crew, fuel, and a lot of goodwill from people who didn’t have to give any of it.
