Oyster Bay to St Francis

The St Francis paddlers came out to Oyster Bay to keep me company, so it was a later start than usual. With no wind or swell to worry about we paddled right along the shore, passing the spot where Eskom is planning to build another nuclear power station.

A school of dolphins joined us on the run into St Francis Bay – I’d watched them make the same trip for three days running by now. Rounding Cape St Francis lighthouse the NSRI came out to greet us, and we picked up more paddlers at the main beach until our numbers swelled to almost twenty. At Bruce’s Beauties we caught a wave or two just for fun.

Our host for the next few days, Etienne Buys, arrived in his ski boat and I hopped onto the wash for the rest of the way to the Krom River mouth. Paddling into the St Francis canals is quite something – the impressive homes along the banks, and then the devastation left by the recent fire. We got out at the St Francis marina/slipway.
