Kei Mouth to Kob Inn
10 January 2013 · 40km, 3hrs 30min
For the stretch through to Port St Johns we were joined by Chris Bordeaux from East London, our “guide” and a mine of Wild Coast knowledge. A late start after the drive from Cinsta East; leaving was a quick paddle through virtually no surf, though the water was muddy brown just after low tide.
I paddled mostly behind the breakers to stay out of the current, averaging 11.5km/h against what was still a head current. Many years earlier I’d hiked from Kob Inn to Morgan Bay over five days, so it was fun recognising places from the sea this time round. The wind increased to over 30km/h through the day. Approaching Kob Inn I couldn’t raise Warren on the radio, so I beached before the river mouth where the surf looked smallest and walked 500m to the ski boat launch site to wait.
Tomorrow: the Bashee river, and hopefully I’ll get there before my crew again.
