Shooting the Weir to Kambathi

Day 3

First job of the morning: shoot the weir. Easier than trying to portage it — and a good deal more fun.

It’s a tough challenge, paddling a Cape river in winter day after day, and today the comms went a little quiet for a while. A good night’s sleep beforehand, though the wind gave the tent hell — no damage done. By the afternoon, Jonkershoek bridge was behind and the pace was still strong.

Another big day — 63km again — ending at Kambathi. Owner Jaco Badenhorst had been following the trip’s progress and was waiting on the riverbank to welcome the paddle in, swapping a cold tent for a warm bed and a roaring fire for the night.
